Finding Points of Light in the Darkness

The days are short. Darkness comes early. That darkness can feel heavy. But even in a dark season you can find points of light. In this season, we have multiple holidays incorporating candles and light, our communal need for light in the darkness, for hope.
For me, this is particularly a time of dark and light. I lost both of my parents during this season. I will light a candle for 24 hours to honor each of them. A soft, continuous glow. A reminder of their lives. A reminder that there is light. I know I am not the only one who sits with loss in this season of so much merriment and joy. I know I’m not the only one seeking light in that darkness.
Will you join me in seeking points of light? Creating points of light? Perhaps being points of light?
Seek Awe
I find awe regularly in nature. Seeking awe is a practice, one we can all take part in.
Every summer on Cape Cod, I go out on the day that sunrise and low tide coincide. I drag Chip with me, and every year he is reluctant at first, and then delighted when we see the sunrise on the horizon and reflected on the water.
Over the fall, I loved walking with the early morning light filtering through the red leaves. I always lament when we lose the morning light, but then the rains come and the waterfalls are amazing.
I encourage you to find the awe around you, even in the difficult seasons. Step outside to see the sunset or the full moon. Take a walk without your phone; see how many colors you can find even on a gray day. Sit by the water. Close your eyes and listen for birdsong.
Beauty and wonder and awe await you — points of light.
Ground in Joy
Walking with my dog Murphy in the morning is a way to be grounded in joy to start the day. He’s so goofy and joyful, whether I’m throwing a ball on the beach or bringing him on a wooded trail.
This year I also got to babysit as a new grandma. I had the joy of helping my son and daughter-in-law and the delight of watching and holding my grandbaby.
Where can you find more joy?
Kindness Counts
In a world that is sometimes uncaring, small acts of kindness are big points of light. I like to collect these. Make a list of every kindness you see today, no matter how small.
Being kind brings light too — light to others, light to the world, but also light to your own heart. A smile, a heartfelt thank you, really listening to someone without trying to solve their problem, a donation, an offer of help … what kindness can you do today?
Sometimes the points of light can seem tiny in a great darkness, but they add up. Gather them. Create them. There is always light in the darkness.
