What Are Your Dreams for the New Year?
A lot of people are making (or breaking) resolutions right now. I’ve been there. And, several years ago I gave myself this time for dreaming instead.
What comes up when you take a walk and let yourself day dream? Or when you just sit and look out the window or close your eyes and relax? Think of relaxing and dreaming as a starting point for what you want. Let your dreams pull you forward.
What are you dreaming of for 2025?
How to Go from Dreaming to Doing
It’s one thing to dream, but what if we want that dream to be a reality? How do you move from an idea or vision to something actually in your life?
Start by asking yourself some questions.
- What is my WHY? Why do I want to pursue this goal?
- How is this dream related to my core values? (Want to get really clear on your values? Try this free resource: 3 Steps to Having a Meaningful Life You Love)
- What might I need to learn?
- What is one tiny step I can take toward this dream?
- What would I regret if I don’t try?
And this question is a powerful one: Why is this (goal or experience or change…) important to me?
What I’m Dreaming … and Doing
I dream about creating and teaching an intergenerational memoir course. My WHY is to help people not feel lonely, to feel more connection. I want to help my clients and students find more meaning and purpose. This is really important to me.
It would be easy to “mean” to do something and not. So I’m purposely blocking off time, 2-3 hours a week, working on this dream. I can’t devote every hour of every day to my dream … but I can do a little bit regularly.
Instead of making a to do list, I have created a goal map. I am identifying all of the tiny and big steps I can take. Breaking that dream into small things you can do is what brings a dream from an idea to life.
So What’s Your Dream?
Do you know what your dream for now (or the future) is already? Maybe it’s something that you’ve been thinking about for a while. Maybe it’s something that recently appeared in your life. Try writing it down. Try saying it aloud. And take a tiny first step, and then another – gaining momentum and joy.
Open up to what your dream is. Claim it. Then claim time for it. I’d love to know what idea is lighting you up right now.
